Once you know what to feed, the next practical hurdle is where to get it. The good news is that the UK has an excellent raw feeding scene, with specialist suppliers, helpful butchers and bulk options to suit every budget. Here is how to source well.
The main ways to buy
There are three broad routes, and most owners end up using a mix.
Specialist raw suppliers. These companies exist specifically to feed raw-fed dogs. They sell complete minces, single proteins, organ packs, bones, oily fish and chews, usually frozen and delivered to your door. They are the backbone of most people’s raw feeding, offering convenience, consistency and a huge range.
Local butchers. An underrated goldmine. Butchers often sell offal, carcasses, necks and trim cheaply, sometimes setting things aside if you ask. Building a relationship with a good local butcher can transform both your variety and your costs.
Bulk and wholesale. For larger dogs or multi-dog homes, buying in bulk brings the per-kilo price right down. This needs freezer space, but the savings are significant.
What to look for in a supplier
Not all raw food is equal. When choosing where to buy, look for:
- Clear labelling of ratios and ingredients. You want to know whether a mince is plain muscle meat or a complete with bone and organ already included.
- DEFRA approval. Reputable UK raw pet food producers operate under DEFRA registration and approval. It is a reasonable baseline to ask about.
- Traceable, quality sourcing. Good suppliers are open about where their meat comes from and its quality.
- Sensible packaging. Portioned tubs or chubs make life easier, especially when you are starting out.
- Cold-chain delivery. Frozen food should arrive frozen or very cold, well insulated.
Understanding “complete” versus DIY minces
This trips up a lot of beginners, so it is worth being clear.
A complete mince already contains the right proportions of muscle, bone and organ. It is balanced in the bag, which makes it the simplest possible way to feed: defrost and serve.
A plain muscle-meat mince is exactly that, just meat. It is a building block, not a complete meal. You add the bone and organ yourself to hit 80/10/5/5.
Both have their place. Completes are brilliant for convenience and for beginners. Plain minces give you control and often better value once you know what you are doing. Many people use completes as a reliable base and DIY around them for variety and cost.
Useful staples to keep stocked
A well-run raw freezer usually contains:
- A couple of complete minces for easy days.
- One or two plain muscle-meat minces.
- A bone source such as chicken necks, wings or carcasses.
- Liver and a second organ such as kidney.
- Green tripe, the gut-friendly all-rounder.
- Oily fish such as sardines, sprats or mackerel for omega-3, fed roughly once a week.
- A few natural chews for enrichment and teeth.
With that range in the freezer you can build a balanced, varied week without a special shop every few days.
A word on quality and trust
Feed your dog from suppliers you would be comfortable buying from for yourself. The UK raw community is full of recommendations, and word of mouth is genuinely useful here. If a deal looks too cheap to be true, ask what corners have been cut.
On our suppliers page we list UK raw suppliers we rate and would feed our own dogs from. Some of those links may be affiliate links, which helps support this site, but we only ever recommend suppliers we genuinely trust.
Make your shopping list do the work
The biggest practical win is buying to a plan rather than buying on instinct. When you know the exact quantities you need for the week, you buy the right amount, waste less, and keep the freezer in order. A tailored weekly plan turns your meals straight into a combined shopping list, so sourcing becomes a five-minute job rather than a guessing game.
